Obituary For Ruth S. Holmes 

Edelstein - Ruth Viola Streitmatter Holmes, 78, of Edelstein, died at 4:35 p.m.
Monday, February 4, 2002 , at Proctor Hospital in Peoria , where she had been a patient since February 1st.

Born in Hallock Township , Peoria County on January 2, 1924 to Alfred and Rose Miller Streitmatter, she married Zealy Maurice Holmes of Edelstein , Illinois , on June 29, 1944 . He survives.

Also surviving are 3 daughters, Connie Holmes-Nelson of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada, Peggy Holmes-Hicks (and James Hicks) of Chillicothe, and Wendy Holmes- Nelson (and Rod) of Minneapolis, MN, and 3 grand-daughters, Cailin Anne Nelson, EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks and Kira Zhibo Nelson. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

She was a former member of the Edelstein Congregational/UCC Church and was active in the Interfaith Council of Service to Migrant Families, the Central Illinois Association of the United Church of Christ, and the World Council of Churches. In recent years she was a member of the First Federated Church of Peoria. She sat for more than 20 years as an elected member of the Illinois Central College Board of Trustees, serving as board president and helping found the ICC Educational Foundation. She established the annual Ruth Holmes Scholarship, awarded to an outstanding student of music or art. She also established the ICC artist-in-residence program. In 1992 she was named Person of the Year by the National Council on Community Service and Continuing Education. She received a Meritorious Service Award from the Community College System of Illinois in 1992.

She made other educational contributions through her years of 4-H leadership, as founder and director of the Princeville Area Child Development Center , and as a long-time participant in the University of Illinois World Affairs Program .

As a realtor with Jim Maloof Realty, she won top awards for sales. She was a member of the National Association of Realtors, Peoria Board of Realtors and the Women¹s Council of Realtors.

A private family graveside service will be held at Mt. Hawley Cemetery . The family will receive friends at First Federated Church of Peoria on Saturday, February 9, 2002 , from 1 to 2 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 p.m.

On Sunday, Feb. 10, the Edelstein Congregational Church will host a pot-luck lunch in her honor at noon in the church Fellowship Hall.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Ruth Holmes Scholarship Fund of the Illinois Central College Foundation.
