Obituary of Earl D. Werner

Princeville - Earl D. "Mickey" Werner, 89, a resident of Gatlinburg , TN , since 1999, former long-time resident of Princeville, died at 11:45 am Wednesday, March 6, 2002 , at the home of his son in Gatlinburg.

Born July 28, 1912 , in Joliet , IL , the son of Don McVie and Catherine Shea Werner, he married Linda Mary Markgraf on June 22, 1935 , in Elmwood Park , IL . She died July 3, 1983 , in Princeville. Also preceding him in death was 1 sister, Mary Alice Werner.

Surviving is 1 daughter , Mary Lynn (and Dennis) Hager of Princeville; 2 sons , Earl Don Werner of Los Gatos, CA, and Michael David (and Cindy) Werner of Gatlinburg, TN ; 9 grandchildren , Ali Branson, Dax & Kelly Werner, Martha Christian, and Katherine, Michael, Tess, Micki, and Albert Werner; 2 great-grandsons , Dawson Werner and Nathan Vaughn.

He worked in the steel mills in Gary , IN , before moving to Princeville , IL in 1935, founding and operating LaMar Stone Quarry until retiring in 1965. Drafted at the age of 30, he served in the US Army during WWII, serving in the 3 rd Division, 10 th Engineers under General George Patton in North Africa . He also served in the invasion of Sicily & Anzio, and was one of the first 15 US soldiers to enter Rome in 1945 after the Germans had left the city. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was a member of the Princeville American Legion Post #248, Lake Shore Club, Chicago, Mt. Hawley Country Club, Peoria , Creve Coeur Club, Peoria , and served as Director and Chairman of the Board of the State Bank of Speer for many years.

He was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Church , Princeville, and a Fourth Degree Knight in Knights of Columbus Council # 11361, Princeville.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am Monday, March 11, 2002 , at St. Mary of the Woods Church . Monsignor Richard Soseman will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 7:00 pm Sunday, March 10, 2002 , at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home, with Knights of Columbus Service at 7:00 pm . Burial will be in St. Mary of the Woods Cemetery , with Military Service provided by his American Legion Post.

Memorial contributions may be made to Akron/Princeville Ambulance Service, Boys Town , Omaha , NE , or St. Jude Midwest Affiliate, Peoria .
