Obituary of Lois M. Challacombe Peoria - Lois M. Challacombe, 96, a resident of ManorCare Health Services, formerly of 3116 N. Avalon Place , died at 6:12 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2003 , at ManorCare. She was born January 3, 1907 , in Jubilee Township , Peoria County , the daughter of Charles and Faceva Shapley Challacombe. A graduate of Illinois State University , Normal , IL , she was a teacher in the Peoria School District for 44 years, teaching at Glen Oak School and Kingman School until retiring in 1972. She also took additional studies at Bradley University , University of Colorado , and University of Wisconsin , and attended reading conferences at George Peabody College , Nashville , TN , and University of Chicago . She was a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon (an honorary Geography Fraternity) at ISU, was a charter member of Theta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa (an international honorary teachers' sorority), and a member of both Illinois and Peoria Area Retired Teachers' Associations. She was also a member of First Presbyterian Church. Surviving is one niece, Charlotte A. Challacombe of rural Brimfield, and several cousins, including Jane Challacombe of rural Edwards, who took care of her for many years. 1 brother, 1 sister, and 1 niece preceded her in death. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2003 , at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home, Princeville. Rev. Mary Kathryn Pearce will officiate. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Jubilee Cemetery in Jubilee College State Park , rural Brimfield. Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church or to South Side Mission.
