Obituary of Robert A. Gehrig

Edelstein - Robert A. Gehrig, 79, of Peoria , formerly of Edelstein, died 11:55 a.m. Tuesday, February 11, 2003 , in the Emergency Room at Proctor Hospital , Peoria .

Born June 8, 1923 , in Lawn Ridge , Illinois , the son of Robert F. and Caroline Streitmatter Gehrig, he married Martha Helen Oppelz on August 30, 1942 , in Peoria . She survives.

Also surviving are 3 sons , Jim (and Gloria) Gehrig of Edelstein , IL , Kenny (and Donna) Gehrig of Princeville, IL, and Keith (and Karen) Gehrig of Edelstein , IL ; 7 grandchildren ; 10 great-grandchildren ; 2 brothers , Howard (and Betty) Gehrig of Nashville, TN, and Floyd (and Betty) Gehrig of Dunlap , IL ; and 1 sister , Daisy (and Clarence) Kreiter of Pekin, IL. His parents, three brothers, Louis Gehrig, Edwin Gehrig, and Ralph Gehrig, and one sister, Dorothy Bodell preceded him in death.

He was a World War II Navy Veteran serving aboard the USS Nashville in the Pacific Theater. After leaving the Navy he then farmed the family farm in the Edelstein area until retiring in 1985. He was a 50-year member of the Edelstein Congregational United Church of Christ and also served as trustee of the board for many years.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2003 , at Edelstein Congregational United Church of Christ, Edelstein. Rev. Richard Sather will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 til 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 13, 2003 , at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home, Princeville, and ½ hour prior to funeral services at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Streitmatter Cemetery , rural Princeville.
