Obituary of Frederick E. McNeeley

Princeville - Frederick E. McNeeley, 80, of 1212 N. Town Ave. , died at 7:45 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2003 , at his residence.

Born May 30, 1922 , in Princeville, the son of Robert and Isla Morrow McNeeley, he married Joan K. Jones on October 27, 1945 , in Abercarn, South Wales .

She survives, along with 1 daughter , Jackie (and Ray) Gilles of rural Princeville; 1 son , Fred (and Karyl) McNeeley of Princeville; 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren ; 2 brothers , Ralph (and Theda) McNeeley of Chillicothe, IL, and Dale (and Lee) McNeeley of San Bruno, CA; 2 sisters , Dorothy Henry of Princeville, and Shirley (and Scott) Gibson of Peoria. His parents, 3 sisters, and 1 brother preceded him in death.

A WWII U.S. Army Veteran, he served in the 29 th infantry division in the first wave on Omaha Beach during the D-Day Invasion and received the Purple Heart. After his military service, he worked as a machinist at Caterpillar Tractor Company from 1945 to 1955. He then attended Zack Monroe's Barber College , Peoria , subsequently owning and operating Fred's Barber Shop in Princeville until retiring in 1997.

He was past Commander of VFW Gold Star Post 1255, serving as Quartermaster for many years. He was co-founder and commissioner of Princeville Little League for 14 years, was charter member and President of Fred's Barber Shop Social Club, and was a member of the GPBA since 1950 bowling with the Sunday Splitters at Mt. Hawley Bowl in Peoria for over 35 years.

He was a member of Princeville United Methodist Church , where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2003 . Rev. Rex Hendrix will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2003 , at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home, and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be in Princeville Cemetery , with military honors by VFW Gold Star Post 1255.

Memorial contributions may be made to his church, Akron-Princeville Ambulance Service, or to Methodist Medical Center Hospice.
