Obituary of Michael J. Butterfield
Princeville - Sgt. Michael J. Butterfield, 51, of 22512 N. Maher Rd. , and a member of the Peoria Police Department since 1981, died 8:55 p.m. , Thursday October 14, 2004 , at his residence of an apparent heart attack.
Born September 25, 1953 , in Pekin , IL , the son of Robert Huffman and Mary Jane Fearey Butterfield, he married Patty S. England on September 11, 1973 , in Basle , Switzerland .
She survives, along with his mother of Pekin, IL, 1 daughter, Amy (and Mark) Avery, 1 son, Marcus (and Chrissy) Butterfield, both of Princeville, 1 foster son, Mickey Wright, who is serving in the US Air Force in Europe, 5 grandsons, Luke Avery, Matthew and Alex Butterfield, and Stacey and Shane Wright, 1 brother, Don (and Mary) Butterfield of Allentown, IL, and 1 nephew. His father and one daughter, Melissa Sue Butterfield preceded him in death.
He was in the US Army from 1971 to 1974, serving as an MP in Darmstadt , Germany.
A graduate of Danville Junior College with an associate's degree in Law Enforcement, he first worked as police officer for the City of Danville, IL, and later was a deputy for McLean County . A member of the Peoria Police Benevolent Association, he was currently a sergeant for the Peoria Police Department last working Wednesday.
He was a graduate of the University of Illinois Police Training Institute, and was trained as a hostage negotiator at Northwestern University in Englewood , CO he was awarded A Lifesaving Award and Police Valor Award in 1986, and the Jaycee's Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer Award in 1987. Most recently, he received his Class A Private Detective License for the State of Illinois , and planned to do private investigative work after retiring.
Funeral services will at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 18, 2004 , at Princeville United Methodist Church . Revs. Maury Gibson and Rex Hendrix will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, October 17, 2004 , at the church. Burial will be in Mackinaw Township Cemetery , Mackinaw.
Memorial contributions may be made to or to Akron-Princeville Fire Department or Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit at Children's Hospital of Illinois at OSF St. Francis Medical Center , Peoria .
Following the graveside service, the family will greet friends at the Princeville United Methodist Church , 420 E. Woertz Rd. , Princeville , IL .
