Obituary of Fred W. Cowling

Princeville - Fred W. Cowling, 79, of Princeville, died at 9:37 a.m. Sunday, May 23, 2004 , at VA Illiana Health Care System in Danville , Illinois .

Born April 2, 1925 , in Denver , Colorado , the son of William John and Katherine Krueger Cowling, he married Joanne M. Jackson on February 2, 1952 , in Chillicothe , Illinois . She survives.

Also surviving are 2 daughters, Joanne (and Mike) Dickerson of Princeville, IL, and Viola (and Glenn) Krause of Mason City, IL; 2 sons, Rodney D. Cowling of LaFayette, IN, and Freddie J. Cowling of Delavan, IL; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and 1 brother, Neal (and Bonnie) Cowling of Frederick Town, MO. His parents, one sister and one brother preceded him in death.

He was a World War II Army Veteran, serving for 11 years, receiving a Purple Heart from being wounded from shrapnel, causing eventual blindness in 1974. He worked for Irons Company in Chillicothe and later he was a truck driver for R. Cox & Son Lumber Company in Princeville until 1974.

Graveside military rites will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 26, 2004 , at Rock Island National Cemetery , Rock Island , IL , conducted by Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2004 , at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home, Princeville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Akron/Princeville Ambulance Service.

Following the graveside service Wednesday in Rock Island , the family will return to 213 E. Evans, Princeville, where all are invited for a cookout.
