Obituary of Lois E. Higgs

Princeville - Lois E. Higgs, 94, of Princeville, died at 2:35 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2004 , at Heartland Health Care Center, Canton , where she had been a patient for the past two weeks.

Born April 15, 1909 , in Monica , IL , the daughter of Ernest and Mabel Leaverton LaMay, she married Paul D. Higgs on June 21, 1933 near Monica.

He survives, along with 2 sons, Donald Paul (and Margie) Higgs of Rochelle , IL , and Richard Harold (and Kathy) Higgs of Las Cruces, NM, and 1 daughter, Marilyn (and Brian) Telander of Cuba, IL, 9 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. 1 brother, Lloyd LaMay, and 1 great-granddaughter, Cora Lee Higgs, preceded her in death.

A graduate of Normal Teacher's College, Normal , IL , she first taught at Trivoli Grade School . She then taught at Edelstein Grade School , and later became Principal. She retired as a first grade teacher at Laura Grade School in 1972. In 1991 she received the WPEO Senior Citizen Award in recognition of her outstanding public service to central Illinois . She was a member of the Princeville Women's Club, former member of Garden Grove Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, and Peoria County Home Extension. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, and president of the Women's Missionary Society.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2004 , at her church. Rev. Harry Losey will officiate. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 29, 2004 , at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home. Burial will be in Princeville Cemetery .
