Obituary of Clyde L. Hampton

Laura – Clyde L. Hampton, 90, a resident of Independence Village, Peoria, formerly of rural Laura, went peacefully to be with the Lord Jesus on Sunday, December 18, 2005, at Independence Village.

Born October 2, 1915, in McLeansboro, IL, the son of Claude and Sophia Mae Hampton, he married Virginia L. Bayles on July 12, 1946, in East Peoria. She preceded him in death on May 14, 1996, at their home in rural Laura. Also preceding him in death was a daughter, Ginger Westerman, one sister, and one brother.

Surviving is 1 daughter, Vickie (and Terry) Haas of Dunlap; 5 grandchildren, Leah Caldwell, Jodie Peters, Jeramiah (and Melissa) Haas, Chelsea, and Joshua Haas; 4 great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Samantha, and Sydney Caldwell, and Mia Haas.

He worked on the construction of the Peoria Lock & Dam when he was 18 years old. He was a WWII Army veteran, serving as a Combat Engineer in the European Theatre, building bridges from France to Berlin. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant. Upon returning from service, he owned and operated Hampton Bridge Company in Princeville. He also worked for McDougal Hartmann Co. as Bridge Superintendent for over 25 years. He was instrumental in the construction of the 1st span of the McCluggage Bridge. The 2nd McCluggage span was his last major project. He retired in 1983.

He was a member of VFW Post 452, Brimfield, as well as Princeville Gold Star Post 1255. He was a member of the Hilton Lodge 1143, AF&AM, East Peoria, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Peoria, and Mohammed Temple, Shrine. He also belonged to Carpenters Local Union # 183, East Peoria. He also was a past member of Millbrook Township Board.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 22, 2005, at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home, Princeville. Mr. Rodger Cowser will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens, Peoria, with graveside military rites conducted by Brimfield VFW Post 452.
