Obituary of Elza S. Peck

Peoria – Elza S. Peck, 97, of Peoria, died at 7:59 pm Wednesday, April 11, 2007, at Bel-Wood Nursing Home, Peoria.

Elza was born January 15, 1910, in Princeville Township, Illinois, the daughter of Wilber and Lizzie Slane, she married Walter S. Peck on June 11, 1942, in Princeville.  He died November 25, 1998, in Peoria.

Surviving are two half-sisters, Susan Schertz of Peoria Heights, and Josephine Slane of Princeville, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.  Her parents and one half-sister, Mary Slane, preceded her in death.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Illinois, Champaign.  She began her teaching career in a one room school house in rural Princeville.  She was Assistant County Superintendent of Schools under John A. Hayes for 6 ½ years.  In 1943 she began teaching at Whittier School in Peoria, and was principal there from 1967 until she retired.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Pi Lamba Theta, Educational Honorary Societies, and Illinois Education Association.

Cremation rites have been accorded and private burial of ashes will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, rural Chillicothe.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bel-Wood Nursing Home or Methodist Medical Center Hospice.
