Obituary of Hazel A. Winters

Peoria – Hazel A. Winters, 95, formerly of East Maywood Avenue, died at 3:20 am Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at Maple Lawn Homes, Eureka, where she resided for the past six years.

Hazel was born June 6, 1912, in Peoria, the daughter of F. Harrison “Harry” and Philena “Pauline” Biehl Peel and grew up on Peoria’s East Bluff neighborhood.  She married her high school sweetheart and forever love, Maurice J. “Maury” Winters on October 12, 1935, in Monica, IL.  He died February 3, 2005, in Eureka.

Surviving is one daughter, Sally (and Arlan) Johnson of Hanna City, IL; four grandchildren, Bret (and Karen) Johnson, Craig (and Julie) Johnson, both of Peoria, Julie Johnson of Arvada, CO, and Chad (and Candy) Johnson of Farmington, IL; and five great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one son, Ned Winters in 2001, and one brother, Harold Peel.

Hazel attended Glen Oak School and was a 1931 graduate of Peoria High School.  She and Maury were co-chairs of their alumni class from their 50th to their 65th reunion.

She first worked for the S.S. Kresge Co. in Peoria and Chicago in the 1930’s.  She later worked for the Ben Franklin store on Knoxville Ave, was receptionist, costume designer, & seamstress for Sally Winters’ Dance Studio in Canton, and was a Welcome Wagon Hostess for several years.  Hazel retired as a receptionist at Dr. Dean Bordeaux’s office in Peoria. 

She enjoyed leading Girl Scout Troop #57 for six years in her home.  She was past president of the Juvenile Theatre Mothers’ Club working to raise funds for shut-in children in the area during the polio epidemic in the 1950s.  She was past president of the Air Force Mothers’ Club.   Hazel’s family was her life and primary vocation.

Hazel was a life-long member and Deacon Emeritus at Glen Oak Christian Church, where services will be held 1:00 pm, Monday, July 2, 2007.  Rev. Randy Williams will officiate.  Visitation will be two hours prior to funeral service at the church.  Burial will be in Springdale Cemetery, Peoria.
