Obituary of George E. "Willard" McCartney

Chillicothe – George E.  “Willard” McCartney, 74, of Chillicothe, formerly of Princeville, died at 1:55 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2008, at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria.

George was born on May 21, 1933, in Sparland, Illinois, the son of Ernest and Elsbeth Petrich McCartney.  He married W. Dorothy Miller on November 3, 1957, in Princeville.  She died April 7, 1995, in Peoria.

Surviving is one daughter, Lynn (and Larry) Simmons of Princeville; one daughter-in-law, Becky McCartney of Princeville; three grandchildren, Taylor Simmons, Hayley McCartney, & Zach Simmons; one sister, Katherine (and Fred) Kelly of Chillicothe; one brother, Wayne (and Delores) McCartney of Lacon; one sister-in-law, Shirlee (and James) Clark of Princeville; and several nieces and nephews.  His parents, one son, Paul McCartney, and one grandson, Tyler McCartney preceded him in death.

George was a United States Army veteran, serving in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955.  George first worked for LaMar Stone Company in Princeville as a truck driver for 14 years.  He later worked as a carpenter for 33 years until retiring.

George was a member of the Princeville VFW Gold Star Post #1255, where he served as commander for many years.  He was co-founder and director of the Princeville Little League Association for 22 years. George was a member of Princeville United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home, Princeville.  Rev. Marc Brown will officiate.  Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Princeville Cemetery with military rites conducted by his post.

Memorial contributions may be made to his church, Akron/Princeville Ambulance Service or Rescue 33.
