Obituary of Harold Eugene Crumley

East Peoria – Harold Eugene “Gene” Crumley, 78, of East Peoria, died at 8:51 a.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2009, at Proctor Hospital, Peoria, where he had been a patient since May 9th.

Gene was born on April 16, 1931, at Manchester, IL, the son of Paul E. & Veda A. Bunch Crumley.  He married Pauline White on November 12, 1950, at Rushville, IL.  Pauline survives, along with two sons, David (Marilee) Crumley of Deming, NM, and Gary (Barbra) Crumley of Walnut Creek, CA; four grandchildren, Scott & Troy Crumley, and Jonathan & Brandon Crumley; and one sister, Margaret (John) Shaver of Macomb, IL.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gene was a 1949 graduate of Rushville High School.  He joined the US Navy and served aboard the battleship USS New Jersey where he learned the welding trade.  In 1957, he began working for Bessler Welding in East Peoria, and in 1974 he purchased the business, retiring in 1996.

He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 649, Spring Bay American Legion Post 1115, VFW Post 814, Peoria, Grandview Lodge #1112, AF&AM, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Peoria, Mohammed Temple, Shrine, and its Legion of Honor, and was a member of Glen Oak Christian Church, Peoria, where he served as a board member, taught Sunday School, and was honored with the title of Deacon Emeritus.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 29, 2009, at Glen Oak Christian Church, 1115 E Republic Ave, Peoria.  Rev. Dr. Randy Williams will officiate.  Visitation will be held Thursday from 5 to 8:00 p.m. at the church.  Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Palm Cemetery near Rushville, IL.

Memorial contributions may be made to the church or to Spring Bay Firefighters Association.
