Obituary of James R. DeBord, Sr.

Monica – James R. DeBord, Sr., 82, of rural Monica, died at 10:33 p.m. Monday, September 7, 2009, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center, Peoria, where he had been a patient for a week.

Jim was born August 29, 1927, in rural Monica in the same house he has lived in all of his life, the son of Ray E. & Mary E. Camp DeBord.  He married Joan M. Scott on August 10, 1953, in Chillicothe, IL.  She survives, along with one daughter, Mary J. DeBord of rural Princeville; three sons, Jim (and LaLette) DeBord, Jr., Larry “Shine” (and Maralee) DeBord, and Bill (and Christy) DeBord, all of Princeville; six grandchildren, Rachel (and Sean) McGinn & Ryan DeBord, Grant & Brooke DeBord, and Alec & Shawn DeBord; two great-granddaughters, Kinley & Jameson McGinn; a sister-in-law, Maxine DeBord; and many nieces & nephews & great nieces & nephews.  He was preceded in death by his brother, Henry, and two sisters, Amy Knowles & Louise Ingle.

Jim was a U.S. Air Force Veteran serving during the Korean Conflict.  He worked as an equipment operator for the Peoria County Highway Department out of Maxwell Station for many years before retiring.   He was a member of the VFW Gold Star Post 1255, and a member of the Monica United Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 10, 2009, at Hammitt-Hott Funeral Home.  Rev. Marc Brown will officiate.  Visitation will be from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Princeville Cemetery, with military honors accorded.

Memorial contributions may be made to Akron-Princeville Ambulance Service or to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
