Obituary of Samuel A. Campbell

Peoria – Samuel A. Campbell, 88, of Peoria, died at 12:22 a.m. Wednesday, September 29, 2010, at Bel-Wood Nursing Home, where he had been a patient since January, 2006.

Sam was born September 9, 1922, in Wapella, IL, the son of Taylor and Hazel Payton Campbell.  He married Mildred L. Smith on August 6, 1949, in Peoria. She survives, along with one son, Michael (Lori) Campbell of Grants Pass, OR; one daughter, Kathleen Campbell of Peoria; two grandchildren, Erin Louise Campbell of San Francisco and Samuel Pierce Taylor Campbell of Redding, CA; one brother, Terry Campbell, and one sister, Sharon (James) Robinson, both of Springfield, IL; and cousins, Mary (Larry) Mohr of Normal, IL and Dorothy (Darold) McCoy of Coal City, NC.

A graduate of Clinton (IL) High School, he served in the US Army Signal Corps during WWII.  In 1947, he began work for Caterpillar, Inc, retiring in 1986 as a Tool Engineer. Sam’s avocation was anything to do with railroading. He was an avid student of railroad history and was an H.O model railroader. Sam also had a great love of history and was especially interested in John and George Rogers Clark, and the Rogers & Clark Expedition to the Pacific. He was a Red Cross volunteer, and was honored for his 40 platelet pheresis donations. Sam was also Past-President of the Peoria Color Camera Club.  He was a member of Glen Oak Christian Church, where he sang in the Chancel Choir and helped with the Weekday Wonders Program.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2010, at Cumerford Hurd Funeral Home, 428 W. McClure Ave.  Rev. Dr. Randy Williams, Rev. Dr. Paul Isom, Rev. Tom Malbone, and Rev. O. Dale Williams will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral on Saturday. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bel-Wood Nursing Home Family Advisory Council or to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
