Obituary of John R. Harvey

Lawn Ridge – John R. “Jack” Harvey, 90, of Lawn Ridge, died at 8:00 p.m. Sunday, November 14, 2010, at the Illinois Veteran’s Home, Quincy.

John was born January 9, 1920, in Salt Creek Twp near Easton, IL, the son of Dell and Joyce Sutton Harvey.  He married Lee Ann Michels on June 27, 1943, in Norfolk, VA.  She preceded him in death on October 13, 2005, at Lawn Ridge. Also preceding him in death were his parents, one sister and one brother. Surviving are three sons, Robert (Beverly) Harvey of Vail, AZ, Roger (Linda) Harvey of LaMoille, IL, and John (Sandy) Harvey of Peoria; one sister, Anna Bell Updyke of Wyoming, IL; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

John grew up in the Princeville area, graduating from Princeville High School in 1938. He was one of the first to attend Boy’s State College, formerly known as Pioneer Boy’s State College. He farmed with his dad until joining the U.S. Navy in 1941, serving as a Petty Officer First Class in the Pacific Theatre. He was discharged in 1945. He then farmed in the Toulon and Laura areas until moving to Mendota, IL, where he managed a Standard Oil station for two years, then managed a Chevrolet dealer’s auto body shop. He then moved to the Edelstein/Lawn Ridge area where he worked for the Chillicothe Ford dealer until retiring.

He was a 50+ year member of the Masons, most recently of Princeville Lodge 360, AF&AM. He was also a member of VFW Gold Star Post 1255, American Legion Post 248, and a member of the Edelstein Congregational UCC Church, where he served as a Deacon.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 18, 2010, at the Edelstein Congregational UCC Church. Rev. David Stamerjohn will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens, Peoria.

Memorial contributions may be made to Turner House, Toulon, or to the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Quincy.
