Obituary of Charles T. Hayes

Elmwood – Charles T. Hayes, 97, of Elmwood, died at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, January 28, 2010, at Toulon Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

Charles was born April 13, 1912, in Jubilee Township, Peoria County, Illinois, the son of Charles Leslie and Mina Miller Hayes.  He married Irene J. Bruninga on March 3, 1934, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Brimfield.  She died January 25, 2009, in Peoria.

Surviving are two daughters, Jean Coon of Princeville, and Mary Joan (and Jim) Smith of Dunlap; five grandchildren, Mark (and Jean) Coon of Lake Villa, IL, Barb Messersmith of Princeville, Brenda (and Ken) Ward of Pinellas Park, FL, Jeff (and Karla) Smith of Princeville, and Jill (and Brad) Yoder of Congerville; 13 great- grandchildren, Ryan, Erin, & Austin Coon, Ashley & Jimmy Messersmith, Sara Bohm, Jolene, Todd, & Rachel Ward, Kristi & Andy Smith, and Brett & Callie Yoder; 1 great-great-granddaughter, Jordyn Bohm; one brother, Donald (and Margaret) Hayes; one sister-in-law, Ruby Garrison of Maumee, OH; and several nieces and nephews.  His parents, one brother, Max Hayes, and two infant sisters preceded him in death.

Charles worked for the Illinois Department of Transportation in the 1960’s.  He also farmed in Peoria, Knox, and Fulton counties for many years, retiring in 1977.  He was a member of the Peoria County Farm Bureau and a charter member of the Kickapoo Sportmans Club.  He was a past member and secretary of the Brimfield Unit School District #309 School Board for many years.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Brimfield, where funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 2, 2010.  Pastor Michael Liese will officiate.  Visitation will be one hour prior to funeral service.  Burial will be in St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery (Jubilee Township), rural Brimfield.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to his church.
