Obituary of Gertrude B. Simpson
Monica – Gertrude B. “Bernie” Simpson, 79, of Monica, died at 5:15 p.m. Sunday, September 12, 2010, at Methodist Medical Center, Peoria.
Bernie was born January 3, 1931, in Middlegrove, IL, the daughter of Ivor and Freida Taylor Brooks. She married Edward L. Simpson on December 3, 1978, in Monica. He died May 1, 2007, in Monica.
Surviving are two daughters, Eva Marie Whitby of Peoria, and Freida Tucker of Monica; six stepchildren, Jim Golden of Atlanta, GA, Peggy Sargent and Linda (Howard) Simmons both of Toulon, Mike (Debra) Simpson of Brimfield, Polly (Rick) Philbee Princeville, and Judy Hart of Laura; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, three sisters, Patricia Johnston and Carol Denton both of Peoria, and May Moore of Missouri; and one brother, Richard (Sharon) Brooks of Hanna City. Her parents, one sister, and one son-in-law, Kevin Whitby preceded her in death.
Bernie worked the production line at Alcoa in Princeville, retiring in 1991. She attended the Monica United Methodist Church, where she helped with church and community dinners. Bernie also enjoyed canning and she made the best jams & jellies.
Cremation has been accorded and a memorial service will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, September 17, 2010, at Monica United Methodist Church. Rev. Tim Pearce will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until time of the service. Burial of ashes will be at a later date in Middlegrove Cemetery.
